An Important Application of RFID

Though this is a sad story, the following article hints that RFID might have been a technology used to solve the crime:

AP, 2011. Arrest made in $1.5 million casino chip heist. The Wall Street Journal, Feb. 3.

From the article:

"Bellagio officials wouldn't say whether MGM Resorts International properties, which include the posh hotel-casino on the Strip known for its fountains, are among Las Vegas casinos that embed radio frequency devices inside the tokens."

Some time ago, we wrote the following article about the potential of RFID as a deterrent to theft:

Koh, R., E.W. Schuster and N.S. Lam, “Prediction, detection and proof: An integrated Auto-ID solution to theft,” MIT Auto-ID Center, Cambridge, MA (2003).

I believe that this was the first article of its kind.

Though not a universal solution, RFID will play an increasing role in theft detection and deterrence. The best solutions will include the use of RFID in conjunction with other technologies.
