The Serious Situation in Japan

It is regrettable that the situation in Japan has become dire. My heart goes out to all of the Japanese people, many who are suffering a great deal.

There are at least 100,000 people who have been evacuated from the North Eastern part of the country. This type of disruption is extremely difficult for Japanese culture. In 1995, the evacuations from Kobe caused widespread and uncharacteristic social changes, especially among the older population. Many became quiet, disoriented, and withdrawn when quickly moved to new locations.

The government is making an all-out effort to deal with the situation. However, what is happening is perhaps bigger than what any government can handle.
