Though it might have been just the building around the reactor that exploded, I think there is great cause for concern that the reactor will eventually meltdown and explore.
The building perhaps contained many control systems. Without these systems operating, the nuclear reaction would be uncontrollable. If a partial shutdown was accomplished then perhaps there is time to take evasive action.
In any case, I think it is a serious event worth close watch. I remain concerned for my friends in Japan.
