The Florida Orange Crop

The WSJ is reporting today that the FL orange crop is projected as 138 million 90-lb boxes, down 3.4% from the Dec. estimate.

In response, PepsiCo, Inc. is raising prices on its Tropicana orange juice by 4% - 8%.

Stuart Allen and I have done a great deal of work in the area of harvest risk and frost damage.

The following article provides an example:

Allen, Stuart J., Schuster, Edmund W., 2004. Controlling the risk for an agricultural harvest. Manufacturing & Service Operations Management 6, pp. 225-236.

I think more of this type of research needs to be implemented in the Florida orange juice industry.

Harvest risk in combination with citrus canker and greening represent two significant challenges for the Florida citrus industry.
