Report on Food Safety in the United States


One of the reasons for pushing RFID forward at MIT in 2002, as part of Auto-ID Center and Labs, was to do track and trace for the food supply chain to improve food safety.

This goal has not been realized.

In 2010, the US Congress has considered new legislation to improve food safety. The article below reports on recent research in this important public health area:

I think the following quote from the article highlights an significant statistic included in the CDC report:

"More than three-quarters of the illnesses are never traced to a particular pathogen. Most that are linked to a pathogen are caused by norovirus, which is responsible for an estimated 5.5 million infections a year. Second is Salmonella, which has been behind several outbreaks in recent years, cropping up in unexpected sources such as peanuts."
