This article came to my attention via the Chronicle for Higher Education,
I suppose there were good intentions by those involved. However, there was also a great deal of money in the deal.
I am not sure what becomes a conflict of interest in the context of this situation.
Through my own experience, I know of situations involving conflict of interest between university staff and industry.
However, MIT instructs us to never deal with a government. If such a research (or other) opportunity exists, it must go to the uppermost levels of the Institute for evaluation and approval. I think this is a good approach.
